About us

Partners

AMW is specialized on the breeding and the use of Trichogramma parasitic wasps for the biological protection of plants and stored products.

Founded in 1998, AMW stands for Appel-Melchior-Wührer, the three original partners, with Sylvia Melchior and Dr. Bernd Wührer being the managers. C. Appel is one of the pioneers of the use of parasitic wasps in corn. Almost 30 years ago the procedure was developed together with research institutes and first used on the multiplication areas of the sister company L. C. Nungesser in Schlatt. Therefore, AMW looks back on decades of experience in the use of egg parasites.

Products

Today, we breed and distribute throughout Europe different Trichogramma parasitic wasps for the control of various damaging moths in field and greenhouse cultivations, in the protection of stored products, in grain warehouses, stores and private households.

Innovations

With the TrichoKugel® from a organic material, a new era of the biological control of the European corn borer began. The beneficial insects can now be applied by machine, the use has also become interesting for large companies.

The TrichoKugel® is the leading procedure with respect to throwing units. Since 2002, a commercial use has been offered by a contractor in Southern Baden and the area of the machine application has been extended to more than 1 000 ha corn. The TrichoKugel was applied in the new Länder by agricultural aircrafts. Since 2014, the application is carried out by multicopters from the air.

In the summer of 2007, we used for the first time the larval parasite Bracon brevicornis to control the European corn borer. In combination with Trichogramma it shall increase the efficiency of the biological control of the European corn borer.

Projects

Partner in the project Germann Barcoding of Life-Project (GBol). A nation wide collection of the Trichogramma species occurring in Germany as well as their establishment in a life collection. Duration 2016 to 2018. Further information: www.bolgermany.de

Partner in the EU project entitled ´BINGO – Breeding Invertebrates for Next Generation BioControl Training Network`. Duration from 2015 to 2018

Joint project entitled ´Beneficial insects for the control of moths and beetles in grain warehouses with long-term storage`

With a duration from October 2013 to April 2016 our new joint project entitled ´Beneficial insects for the control of moths and beetles in grain warehouses with long-term storage` is supported by the German Federal Agency for Agriculture and Food (BLE).

The support of the project is provided from the funds of the Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection (BMELV) according to a decision of the German Federal Parliament. The project sponsorship is carried out by the German Federal Ministry for Agriculture and Food (BLE) within the framework of the innovation-support programme. The investigation project is realized in cooperation with the company Biologische Beratung Ltd. in Berlin and the University of Hohenheim.

Use of a beneficial insect, the larval parasite Bracon brevicornis, for biological control of the  European corn borer; development of a mass breeding and release method for Bracon brevocornis.

Cooperation project in cooperation with the University of Bremen, sponsored by the ZIM (Central innovation program for medium-sized companies of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi), Duration until July 2012.

Project on the use of Trichogramma parasitic wasps as liquid application against the codling moth Cydia pomonella L. sponsored by the BLE (German Federal Ministry for Agriculture and Food ). Joint project with the University of Hohenheim and the Julius Kühn Institute (former BBA Darmstadt ). Start July 01, 2007, duration 3 years.

From January 01, 2005 until December 31, 2007 we worked on a Project on the research of the use of Trichogramma against the pest Helicoverpa armigera immigrated to Europe co-financed by the DBU (German Environment Foundation).
